It is with deep sadness that we learned yesterday of the death of our former colleague and friend Mrs Mary Tierney.  When Mary retired in May 2011 we wished her long years of health and happiness, to enjoy with her beloved Shay, Mick and Annie but sadly this was not to be.  She has been taken from them and from her wide circle of friends far too early. 

For those of us privileged enough to have worked with Mary, her giftedness was immediately evident.  Needless to remark she was a stunning mathematician and shared her passion for her subject with generations of students here at the Green.  However her talents extended way beyond her subject.  Mary was an authority on the arts, with an enviable knowledge of poetry and an innate talent for finding the perfect poem for every occasion, often from the most obscure international poets.  She was a talented musician and a simply amazing craftsperson.  All in all Mary was special.  She will be missed more than any words here can say.
