On Thursday, 5 March, the Senior 1 Hockey team were in the Leinster League Final against Newpark. The whole school, students and teachers alike, headed out to Three Rock at one o’ clock for the big game. There was great excitement in the air as the chanting got underway before the match had even begun! The team, captained by Anna Woods, had been training hard all season and had played very well but were unlucky to be defeated by Alexandra College in the Cup semi-final.
From the very first whistle, Loreto worked extremely hard and played their hearts out. Unfortunately Sarah Torrans, a fantastic player, was injured and had to be taken off. However, even with this major throwback Loreto still continued to fight hard. At halftime the score was 0-0 and everyone was nervous about what way the score might go. It was with just 10 minutes to go that Sophie Dolan scored a great goal which put Loreto ahead by one. Right until the very end each and every player played their hearts out to ensure that Newpark didn’t score a goal. Eibhinn Linehan, the team’s goalie, made some great saves throughout the match. The whistle finally blew and Loreto had won the Senior 1 Leinster League final for the first time in history! There was a great sense of school spirit as everybody rushed out onto the pitch to congratulate the team and celebrate the victory.
Congratulations to everyone on the team: Anna Woods(Captain), Ellie Wilde(Vice-Captain), Katie Conaty, Aoife Corcoran, Ciara Griffin, Alex Griffin, Ciara Deevy, Sophie Dolan, Jenny Lambe, Eibhinn Linehan, Kate Fullen, Emma Horan, Corinne Henry- Bezy and Sarah Torrans. Many thanks to their coaches, Deirdre Duke and Ms. Kelly, for all the hard work they put into training them throughout the season. Many thanks also to Cillian O’ Riordan for organising all the matches throughout the year. We are truly proud of our Senior 1 Hockey team and this is definitely a match that will never be forgotten!
