On Monday, 26th September Loreto College had a surprise visit from two very special 2016 Olympians. Claire Lambe (Class of 2008) and Orla Comerford (Class of 2016) gave very generously of their time to come and speak to us about their Olympic experiences.
Claire was part of the Irish Rowing Team at the Olympics, racing in the women’s lightweight double sculls category. The games were a culmination of years of training and perseverance by Claire. Having been disappointed in her attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, her joy and pride at her participation this year was clear for all to see. Claire and her partner, Sinead Jennings, came 6th in the final of the women’s lightweight double sculls.
Orla was a member of the Irish Paralympics Team, running in the 100m sprint. Orla completed her Leaving Certificate here in the school in June, all the while training for the Paralympics. Her determination and positive outlook are inspirational and we all listened with admiration and pride as she spoke of her Olympic experience. Orla came 8th in the final of the women’s 100m sprint in Rio this year.
There are not many schools that can boast of having an Olympian as a student/past student but here at Loreto we are fortunate to have two. Two Loreto girls who are proud of their school and their achievements and are kind enough to share their Olympic stories with today’s students.
Congratulations and thank you to Claire and Orla from the Staff and Pupils of Loreto College.
