On the 21st of October 2019 students from Loreto-the-Green took part in Poetry Aloud, a national poetry recital competition. Poetry Aloud is a competition for post-primary schools, organised by Poetry Ireland and The National Library of Ireland, in partnership with University College Cork. Two competition heats run each day in the Library through the months of October and November.
Over 1,700 students took part last year. Students are required to learn two poems by rote; one set poem and a chosen poem from a selection of anthologies. The Junior category learnt ‘Cows at Dugort’ by Jane Clarke and the Intermediate category learnt ’Conducting’ by Luke Morgan. Twelve girls competed from both first and fourth year. With only five students selected from the heat, we were delighted when Brigid from 1B got through to the semi-finals with her recitation of the poem ‘Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carroll. We wish her the best of luck in the next round!
Many thanks to Ms. Ryan for organising our participation in the competition. It was a really great and enjoyable experience for all the girls involved.
