These teams, usually involving around 100 pupils a year, take part in Inter-Class, Inter-School and Loreto Schools events. In addition the girls participate in the East-Leinster Schools competitions, which often leads to Leinster and All-Ireland qualifications. These are also successful sports with many medals won by the girls every year. Several past pupils have made the Irish Team in various disciplines.
General training for the teams takes place on Monday at lunchtime while additional training is organised according to age group, event and time of year. The pupils are invariably entered for all possible schools’ competitions and it is rare that we do not have a girl in every category in both track and field. For some of the running events we are given permission to use the beautiful Iveagh Gardens, which are near the school, located behind the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace. This has proved to be an invaluable location, especially for practising sprints and for trials for school teams. Annual events such as the Christmas Cross-Country Races are now held there.
